Nicki Minajs’ misuse of Malcolm Xs’ image is upsetting on a deeply personal level. as ive stated before, im from Lansing,MI, the town in which Malcolm spent his most formative years. so much that we named a school after him (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Academy) that i attended at one point.
the one thing i noticed before & after is that outside of that school kids were taught more about the “Safe” icons of black history. they never bring up brother Malcolm or Muhammad Ali, but will never stop shoving MLK & Jackie Robinson down our throats.
nicki minajs mass ignorance of the context shows how america wants black people to look at our history: always to the past of struggle but never think about where we could go, and for some black people to work toward assimilation rather betterment.
