The haute couture and luxury fashion brands have also been inspired by (read-copied off of) various African fashion styles. It’s time we are somehow recognized in this industry.
The haute couture and luxury fashion brands are also inspired by (read copy off of) African styles of fashion. So yes it’s about time we received some recognition and money from these brands.
I was one of the Black kids who got accused of “acting white” or being an “oreo”. In retrospect i totally deserved that shit. I was, quite possibly, literally acting white.
A little context: I grew up in a series of foster homes which meant i changed schools practically every year. So wherever i went i was new and the new kid always gets tried. Plus I was super poor, with the holes in my shoes and wearing the same clothes almost every day. So i got picked on a lot because kids are assholes.
I would often go from white schools to hood schools in alternating years. Around 4-5th grade I went to a new foster home where the parent was a teacher so I was finally able to have clean clothes and nice shoes etc. But at the same time I went to a super hood school because it was near the high school she taught at. She was a stickler for proper grammar and enunciation and was one of those pretentious niggas. So she always whipped into me that i was not “ghetto” and that she wouldn’t tolerate “thugs” in her house. Shit, looking back, she might’ve been republican. She was super on the respectability politics thing.
So anyway i went to the hood school and i had nice clothes and since I had always been the victim of kids being assholes, I started to be an asshole to the kids at my new school. I was that person correcting everybody’s words and acting like i was better than everybody. As a result they ain’t fuck with me and said i was acting white. Shit, i thought I was better than them with no real basis for thinking that. Not to mention I was using my insecurities as fuel to oppress others. That sounds like a core tenet of white supremacy. So i was literally, “acting white”.
For a long time I convinced myself that they didn’t like me because I got good grades and behaved in class and THAT’S why they said i was acting white.
It wasn’t until i got to college and saw the diversity within blackness that I realized that they didn’t like me because I was an asshole.
Sorry for the long comment, this could’ve probably been a 3 minute voicemail

When you pronounce things in French, you be sure to pay homage to Pierre Escargot! Lol
I’ve loved Rupaul since he released Supermodel when I was in Jr high, but this is not the first time he’s been problematic. A local talk radio host in Houston (Michael Berry), used to have a drag queen (Chuck Knipp) on his show to do a character called Shirley Q Liquor. Keep in mind, Berry is a white conservative (who is totally NOT racist and we know this FOR SURE because he adopted black children). Knipp himself is a very large white Canadian man. Shirley Q Liquor is a character he does (in black face) of a welfare check receiving single mother of many who is mad that she has to look for work in order to get her welfare check. Hilarious right? Rupaul defended this piece of shit and said he wasn’t racist, but just doing a character, etc etc. It’s pretty bad y’all, just Google the character and you’ll see it’s even worse than it sounds. But according to Rupaul, not racist.
