It’s so upsetting to keep seeing story after story of young girls being sanctioned in their own schools, where they’re supposed to be safe and protected, for wearing their hair the way it comes out of their head. The racism is so blatant.
I’ve learned a lot in recent years about how black women’s hair is policed at their work places and I share that knowledge with my friends because I just didn’t know before. To see it start so young, that’s violence.
I’ve seen so many beautiful black boys and girls with big afros in the streets of NYC recently and it makes me so happy.
I try not to be patronizing because I have to check myself on that level, but internally I’m always like whispering “you’re beautiful.” I want every child to know they are.
I’m a brown Latina and grew up with a pretty racist anti-black family. Even as a kid I felt less than because I was darker than all my cousins. So I was not down with anti-blackness.
As an adult I get so angry still at how much my mom and them tried to teach me black people couldn’t be physically attractive. I always took it personally.
I will never stand for that, especially when it’s said about children.
This just posted on Yahoo: “It is now Illegal in AL to Remove Confederate Monuments.

As always….***** Stars! When I saw Paul Mooney’s afro I hollered!
Shame on a nigga was my favorite Wu-Tang song….. Damn.
Sorry I am back again to correct my previous post. The story with the two girls is not Monteverde Academy (though this school had some natural hair bullshit to happen also) it was actually Mystic Valley Regional Charter School. Also these girls have white parents who are fully supporting them and fighting the school policy. These parents have supported their children and told their children they would continue to fight the policy even if their children decided to change their hair.
I am so SICK of these motherfucking white people policing our babies beautiful hair. I had hair hate for most of my life because of being predominantly white spaces. To be real at 33 I still have it some days when I go into work. I worry that my afro will be seen as messy or unkempt. When I go out today and see all these beautiful brown women and girls with their natural hair it makes me smile so hard. Our hair is beautiful and free and seeing young girls embrace their hair makes my heart smile. Also props to these young woke ass kids. I was listening to another podcast about the situation at Montverde Academy. They have suspended these girls and they have missed out on numerous senior events because they refuse to change their hair. They are at the point that they are risking expulsion. At 17 years old, I was not woke enough or brave enough to lose out on my senior events for principle. Anyway love y’all and keep up the good work.
