The Nerd Off: (Protected Content)
Hi Nerd Off Crew!
First time writing in; long time listener .
So I just wanted to put this on your radar if it’s not on there already. Not sure if you and TNO crew have checked out the new Fox series, The Orville, but it’s actually pretty good. It’s written and stars Seth McFarland and I know TNO crew likes other shows he has written. I do realize that as you say so often, “there is so much good TV on right now for the nerds at heart”, however, this series is def a good one to put on and play in the background.
It’s currently available for free on the Fox app and at present has about 6 episodes.
Here is a pretty good brief summary that I grabbed from the internet.
“Down on his luck after a bitter divorce, Planetary Union officer Ed Mercer finally gets his chance to command his own ship. Determined to prove his worth and start a new chapter, Ed discovers the first wrinkle in his plan when the First Officer assigned to his ship is his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson. As the new commander, Ed assembles a qualified — but eccentric — crew, including his best friend, Gordon, who has problems with authority but is the best helmsman in the fleet; Dr. Claire Finn; Bortus, an alien from a single-sex species; Isaac, an artificial life-form from a machine society; navigator John Lamarr; Alara Kitan, a young, inexperienced security officer; and Yaphit, a gelatinous creature.”
Sincerely,
Jacqueline (@sbelle31 in the Twitter Streets)
I never understood to the Secret Empire hate until y’all talked about it this episode. We Black so we always kinda looked at Steve like these other white liberals who talk about American values but never bring up Black shit. But you got me thinking about Chris Evans being Hydra and getting stuck with Anthony Mackie as Cap? Oh hell no! Y’all not about to take my woke, klan fighting hero, hanging out with Octavia Spencer and replace him with that ain’t shit nigga! Boycott Rod! #NotMyCap
Oh, and look at that, Homecoming just became the #1 Comic Book movie so far this year with that Chinese box office starting to roll in. I guess those hot takes were wrong all along. I swear the only reason people call y’all Marvel stans is you’re not out here just waiting for them to slip up and just inventing stuff to be mad about. Now I know how Disney feels dealing with ABC, calm the fuck down and trust the process.
Hi Rod, Kriss and Aaron (and possibly Karen),
I really enjoy the Nerd Off even though I don’t play any games and some of the things you guys talk about go way over my head. I learn something every episode I listen to and wanted to extend my thanks. I also wanted to let you know that as someone who has never read a Captain America comic (even as a child, something anbout his being a symbol for America made me uneasy, the same goes for Superman), I just pre-ordered the Secret Empire Collection based on your amazing comments about this series. Aside from my status as a black female, I think coming into the series with no preconceived notions or stances will enable me to just enjoy what Nick Spencer and Marvel presented.
P.S. You guys also turned me on to Rick and Morty and Rod and Justin turned me not to Legends. I love those shows so I’m certain I will not be disappointed in Secret Empire when it arrives.
So, I saw The Mummy at home and fucked around and watched the extras. That plane scene in the trailer, them niggas actually flew a plane to zero gravity to film that shit. They put waaaay more effort into that film than it deserved.
I really enjoyed American Assassin. It was *mwah* Impossible White Man perfection. I did want more between Taylor Kitsch-Michael Keaton scenes. I was surprised by the ending. I didn’t expect the nuclear bomb to claim bodies. Also the special effects of the bomb going off was jarring. I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath. Maybe because #45 have been giving nuclear bomb fears a la President Reagan. The main actor played the sidekick on Teen Wolf but I had to look that up.
Greatest American Hero was about a guy who essentially accidentally used an alien suit to act as a bumbling super hero. The running joke was that he didn’t really know how to use it well [the instructions were in the alien language I believe].
