This new taking out the trash is so depressing but necessary. I think the issue with Gabby Douglas is that although she has come out as a victim herself, I think she has internalized The abuse and blames herself and therefore projected it on her teammate. I also believe based on that Simone Biles tweet that she doesn’t get along with the other girls and there may have already been some tension there already because she could have just said nothing instead of victim blaming. I just hope she can learn from this. She’s young and stlll has a lot of living to do.
Totally agree that education on rape culture/misogyny is necessary, at a young age and before these incidents happen. I’m thinking about the defense for people like Louis CK, Richard Dreyfuss, Charlie Rose and others who claim they thought the feelings were mutual. They’re basically saying “I didn’t know I couldn’t do that.” But a huge part of rape culture is this fear that forces women to smile and placate just to keep ourselves safe.
As a black woman who works in Hollywood I think it’s awful, but it’s not that comforting to see these dudes get exposed either. Not to be a negative Nancy but a lot of the older white guys are being cleared out to make room for younger folks who are even more dangerous because they’re in their prime. Most really powerful people in Hollywood are trash behind the scenes. Even black folks. Even women. Even your faves. How do you think they come to be really powerful in the first place? Talent and hard work only go so far.
I work here because I love what I do and if you can believe it, I still think it’s the best business in the world in a lot of ways. But like James Baldwin said, the price one pays to pursue any calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side.
I think there’s great value in Rape Rehab. But that should be the starting point and not the ending point.
If men are being honest with ourselves, 95% of us at least could stand to go through some kind of training and rehabilitation to unlearn rape culture and misogyny.
Some people can unlearn by listening to others but some of these niggas really need intensive therapy.
