What up Rod and Karen,
A listener asked about books on slavery that were good, and I’d like to recommend “The Half Has Never Been Told” by Ed Baptist. In the name of full-disclosure, Ed is a white man, and also my good friend from my days in academia.
But what I loved about his book was he focused on how slavery, specifically, built the US economy and he used the words and letters of black people to bolster his arguments. And he talks about how technological innovations like the cotton gin, made slave owners more evil. Since the cotton could be processed faster they raised the picking quotas and shows how that correlates to the US economy’s meteoric rise.
