As someone who was a kanye fan since middleschool, hearing Ye talk about how people need to respect his mental health is rich. What about the alllll the people you talked shit about over the years? What about Whitney Houston’s family? Or Amber Rose?
Same old Kanye.
Hey there Rod and Karen. I normally nod along in agreement and talk to myself while listening to your episodes, but today’s LGBTQ segment really hit home for me. I’m far from a religious person but I do carry bit of faith that things happen for a reason. I was introduced to your podcast maybe three years ago by Dominic Rivera. He sold me immediately by describing the podcast as a husband and wife who was able to turn their conversations with each other into a whole business. I’ve been hooked ever since. I’m a super big fan and have you guys in my ears honestly every single day trying to catch up on old episodes (but I can save that journey for another time).
The discussion over the teacher getting fired for intentionally using the incorrect pro-nouns to address his student gave me a bit of hope in this crazy world. My 14 year old son, now going by Christopher came out to us as Trans about 6 months ago and its been quite the ride. I’ve been so down (while trying stay positive and supportive for him), thinking about all the challenges he will face with employment discrimination, trying to date and overall just navigating this world surrounded by so much ignorance. He is so smart and I know as his mom it may sound biased but I know he is fully capable of doing anything he wants to in future. I am so fearful of the push back and doors that will close in his face simply because he is living in his truth. We are currently in the process of meeting with his school counselor to find out what the steps are to officially change his name in school, how they address the bathrooms and exactly what rights we have.
We live in northern Virginia so my ears definitely perked up when I heard about the firing of this teacher (although this happened in southern VA). I’ve been assured by other parents that our high school is relatively progressive and accepting of the other trans students that are attending, but that can only ease my fears so much. I just wanted to say that I appreciate you guys bringing these issues to light so often. Sometimes I feel really alone in this and I just want to protect my child. Hearing your guys passion on the subject warms my heart and I really think it was kismet that I started listening to you two and I have to say I have found strength at times in your voices. Anyway – this was extra long, sorry! Just know you guys continue to inspire and although you may not have asked to be role models, my son definitely looks up to you both. Our favorite thing is to sing along and dance to Sylvester’s Do You Wanna Funk? Take care, love you guys!
