Rod, thanks for being here, but I’m speaking directly to Karen right now. Karen, you brought me to tears. I’m not even done listening to the episode, but I have to tell you the impact your comments left on me.
My undergrad was African Studies, and my graduate thesis is on the Black Lives Matter movement. And even while I’m studying, I’ve been so uncomfortable with learning about my history. But you are SO RIGHT. I have never seen someone lynched. I’ve never been spat on, and the racism I’ve experienced has been passive at best. But my ancestors have. My grandmother is still scared to tell me stories about how she grew up, and what her life was like. My mother had to tell me about her mother’s story, because she’s still ashamed of it. Sometimes, I feel like I can’t take another documentary, because I can’t wake up angry everyday. But like you said, the VERY LEAST I can do is be willing to learn the truth. Black people aren’t a monolith, I get it, but I think if there was one truth that would be applicable to the masses, it would be that our ancestors just want us to know what happened. Not everyone feels like they have the ability to protest. Not everyone can be loud about how they oppose the system, because some of us make a living operating in the system that had oppressed us for so long. And I don’t think our grandparents and great grandparents would admonish us for not protesting in the streets. But I think they would be proud of us for learning about the struggles they had to endure.
I didn’t have time to write in for last week’s podcast episodes, and sometimes I feel like I should just skip the feedback episode because none of my opinions will be shared. But listening to this one reminds me: 1. The feedback episodes bring all new material, and 2. There’s always a lesson to be learned.
