As someone who did generally liked this film, I actually understand the complaints with Mortal Kombat 2021. Doing fighting game films, has to be a tough endeavor, because of the different characters & the many plots involved, so this film, admittedly, was in a challenging position of attempting to make all of the pieces fit with the lore of MK.

Like you, Rod, I too, did not like Lewis Tan’s performance because he played such a vanilla character. If nothing else, he could’ve been Johnny Cage or Takeda from MKX, which would have established him a lot more as a character. The script isn’t the greatest, either. The team at Warner Bros. felt like they were on the clock & had to speed up each plot point for time. So understably, if those who aren’t familiar with the Lin Kuei, Shirai Ryu or Black Dragon are definitely going to be lost on why those groups didn’t get a deeper backstory, so I get it. What I did like, was how in line it was with the current MK games from Netherrealm Studios. Since 2011’s rebooted MK9, the games finally gave a damn about the story.

This MK film did match what I wanted, even with its flaws. The film excells with the character depictions of Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Kung Lao & Kabal. I did wish Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung & Millena were more fleshed-out. The fatalities look really good which feel straight out of the game. The fights are solidly choreographed & look pretty good. Some of them are over too soon, but what we got was well-done. I was fairly satisfied with how things turned, even understanding what must be improved on for a better Mortal Kombat sequel that’s not Annihilation.

I agree with every critique Rod had of this movie. Cole was pointless as hell and if they wanted Lewis Tan as the lead they really should have let him be Johnny Cage. A lot of characters were just pointless, it was about a half hour too long, and I wanted more Liu Kang.

That said, like Karen they gave me niggas fucking each other up and that’s all I really came for. 5 outta 5. I will say the newer Mortal Kombat games actually have a ton of lore and more cinematic narrative structure than just a fighting tournament so there’s material there for actual plot. But considering I just watched this on streaming and didn’t have to pay and see it in a theater, I didn’t care about any of that.
