Hey, your Brooklyn based public Librarian here. So happy to hear you cover this story and just be pro library in general . Public libraries do not charge for using computers or using the internet. Literally everything is free except for printing or copying costs. Many public library systems have already eliminated fines so I’m so glad that my system finally joins the pack. But Karen is absolutely right that it is more costly to replace the book. There’s the cost of labor to buy the book, catalog the book, ship the book to the branch and eventually shelf the book. The maximum overdue fine you could accumulate in my system was $5 even if the book cost $100.
Also, Governor Dinner Party makes me laugh just as hard as Governor Blackface. FYI, because of you all, I got everything in my family calling him Gov Blackface. Whenever my 14 year old comes across a positive story about something he’s done, I get a text “Governor Blackface has done it again.” Lol
