The Nerd Off: (Protected Content)
What it do Nerd Off Crew,
I hope all is well.
Ms. Marvel was so much goddamn fun! Iman Vellani showed the fuck out in that role, as did the whole cast. I think I said as much on the last Nerd Off but I’ll say it again: Ms. Marvel was an incredible show and now I finally understand what that symbol on her costume means (I am way behind on comics). I can’t wait see to The Marvels and I also can’t wait to see more of Kamala Khan and her family; the Khan family were supportive and funny and loving and all that shit and I enjoyed watching all that.
On the complete opposite end of family structures, I also finished the latest Umbrella Academy season and that was shit was pretty good. After 3 seasons of watching this dysfunctional ass family I once again am left wondering how Reginald Hargreeves ain’t talked about more as a diabolical F-Tier father, cuz the premise of the show and *especially* this season underscore that man needing to go to the 9th ring of hell. Shouts out to Emmy Raver-Lampman, who plays Alison, cuz she got them good “I’m sick of you fucking white people” eyes. Shouts out to Elliot Page and the Umbrella Academy writers, cuz I think they handled his transition with a deft touch that fit well into the story. Plus, Page’s character, Viktor, shows out a lot more in this season.
Oh and anyone online rooting for Luther and Allison to get together is either a low life deviant championing that ‘cest OR a bot meant to sow discord online.
Speaking of bots, Zach Snyder marshalling a bot army to get WB to let him release an even *longer* version of Justice League sounds about white to me. I’ve said for years now that the Snyder Cut happening is what happens when the terrorist win and I feel absofuckinglutely right in having been said shit. Oh and fuck Ray Fisher too for riding this wave so Snyder could CGI him a fucking Reynolds Wrap body. And somehow that 4 hour masturbatory Snyderfest built a bullshit campaign and got their movie out before we ever got a Black Adam trailer. Whew chile, the ghetto.
Oh and there’s a Moon Girl and Miles Morales comic I just bought cuz (Phonte voice): BLACKNESS!
I hope y’all have a wonderful weekend and thanks as always for the dope shows,
Peace,
Dough
WB wanted to get robbed by a cult they enabled. I literally paid $8 bucks to get the full details of that Rolling Stone article & they did not disappoint. As much as I want to blame Zack Snyder for the 8+ years he held a once great studio hostage, Once again, said it in subsequent posts about this corporation, they gotta get their collective shit together & stop appeasing bots & disingenuous nerds on controlling their shit. They gave Snyder so much money to make a 4 hour cut of a movie that already flopped & did less on HBO Max than James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, Mortal Kombat ’21, Wonder Woman ’84, Dune & others that I haven’t named. 13% of them were bots. Nigga, for what?
All of this was preventable. All of it & got played. Integrity, Souls & money was lost to bullshit. Even ATT, which also encouraged it, dipped to just return to just being a cable company. Dealing with all that debt. Hope Comicsgate & other terrible type companies get the same coverage Rolling Stone put into it. Props to them.
What’s good ppl?! Thanks for another great show. Special thanks to Rod the GAWD for making me feel much better about Kena Bridge of Spirits. I LOVE the game but it kicks my ass at times. Glad to know I wasn’t alone LOL. Keep up the greatness. – ThatDudeFromVI
How’s it going everyone,
Obi-Wan was good. They did Star Wars stuff, so I was cool with it.
I enjoyed Thor Love & Thunder. I liked the silliness of it. Even that bum Russell Crowe didn’t ruin it for me.
Ms Marvel was a lot of fun & Kamala, her family & other members of the community were great.
We also got She-Hulk & Andor coming up next month.
I finished the Lego Star Wars Skywalker saga & now I’m gonna give Power Wash a try & also Man Eater. Cause going round as a shark attacking people looked fun in the trailer.
I also bought & built the Lego Optimus Prime. Just under 2000 pieces & once it’s built, it transforms from truck to robot. The Back to the Future Delorean is my next build.
Also, hopefully we get some cool news coming out of SDCC.
Have a good 1

Hey rod, karen, and assorted nerd off crew this is banger aka lover of persona from twitter. If you dont mind i just want to gush and nerd over some Ms Marvel for a hot minute. So first off disney/marvel is undefeated nevvuh lost, you talk about perfect casting the whole point of ms marvel as a character is she is a massive carol danvers aka captain marvel fangirl so casting an actress who embodied that level of joy and nerdom was perfect, and Iman Vellani as an actress encapsulated the character brilliantly, and one of the best parts of this series outside of iman’s potrayal of kamala khan is that this is at its core a story about family.
First you got yusuf the father a kind/wise man who supports his daughter at every turn. The mother muneeba who is stern and protective, also as we found out later a badass rebel in her own right back in the day, and finally a great older brother aamir who dotes on her and intercedes on her behalf when their is friction between kamala and her parents, and i cant be the only person who watched this and thought wow i truly wish this was my family, and well i wont bore ya too much with my childhood backstory, lets just say when i was in the womb and i threw dice for the kind of family i wanted to be born into, i totally got snake eyes. No joke all my family is either dead or in jail and we white so you know they did all that shit to end up in there lol. I bring that up to say the number of times i was in tears watching kamala khan and her family interact is numerous.
Their warm playful dialogue as a family really served to show that while there are def traces of the whole immigrant family and the pressures of being caught between 2 worlds that is placed on the younger gen trope, it also showed a fully 3-D family that wasnt just lazy muslim/southeast asian stereotypes, and it doesn’t just end with them. When we got to the episode where one of kamala’s best friends nakia was running for a seat on the mosque board you saw that the same cliques including my fav the illumin-aunties which served to show that at the end of the day religion and culture aside you can find the exact type of cliques just as commonly in muslim spaces as you could in non muslim spaces which was realy cool. Speaking of which was i only one when they were explaining about partition that got real lovecraft country vibes like when that show talked about black wallstreet and the tulsa massacre. As a white person who never knew neither of the histories of these 2 tragedies, they did a great job of breaking it down and educating people like myself that arent from the culture so props to them on that.
On a lighter note i had the silliest thought when watching the romance part of this show and that is what if this show is secretly a isekai anime disguised as a comic book show. Think about it for a sec her djinn ancestors are from another world. She unlocks a hidden overpowered set of abilities that works in said new world that she uses to save people and eventually the world, and dont even get me started on the harem aspect between bruno the best friend, kamran of the clandestines, and later kareem of the red daggers, our girl kamala is def an isekai protag. Well sorry for the long comment i love yall and the show and i cant wait till the Marvels movie.
P.S. I think marvel tried to sneak something in at the last minute and im not talking about the allusion to her being a mutant or even them playing that xmen animated series 97 theme song as they did it. No im talking about the line her dad said when he is talking to her at the end on the roof “when you save one life well you saved the world” and i got some real heroes save the cheerleader save the world vibes if yall remember that show from back in the day. So, if that line pays off with kamran saving the world at some point just know like with previous kevin feige easter eggs he might have once again called his own shot in advance.
Hey y’all! Thanks to the $5 just-the-tip option on Spotify, I have been able to enjoy your premium content and The Nerd Off is my favorite.
The way you were advertising Something is Killing the Children sold me and I added all the volumes to my list. I am excited to eventually read it. I did a little research and it looks like it’ll be adapted into a Netflix show, this was from the Wikipedia page: “A Netflix series adaptation by Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy is currently in development and is scheduled for a 2022 release.” They are the ones who did The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep.
There a few games I wanted to ask/talk to y’all about. I was gonna ask about Kena: Bridge of Spirits, but you already did and I am excited to play it. Have any of y’all played/heard of the game Sifu? I have a hate/love relationship with that game. It’s so hard and I am barely on level 3 because I keep dying so much. If y’all like 3rd person beat-em-up martial arts games, check it out.
Lastly, I am not sure if y’all like scary stuff enough to go out and play it, but one of my favorite games is Until Dawn. It’s like a horror movie, but the choices you make can have all the characters live or die, kinda like Mass Effect. It has the Hayden Pantierre (Claire from Heroes) and Rami Malek (Mr Robot) in it. The studio has made several other mini games like it, but they recently released a spiritual successor to it called The Quarry and it has a few big names in it (David Arquette and Justice Smith). I haven’t played it yet and I will once I beat Sifu (so probably never lol), but I am excited to play that as well.
SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN! Yes, sir! There’s a companion book out now called House of Slaughter and I got the first trade, titled The Butcher’s Mark, from my local library. I’m going to read it this week and I don’t have any doubt about the quality.
Also from the library I got a trade for Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog, titled The Fire Next Time, just because it had a sister on the cover in hoops and a head scarf. That was enough for me, but it turns out it’s from the same people who created Killadelphia; even better. This one’s set in Baltimore, looking forward to some crossover action in the future.
Listening to Nerd Off 101 (2018) and y’all are forecasting into the future again:
Black Panther is going to be a billion dollar movie (true)
Jumanji 2 is going to be out before we see a Black Adam movie (also true)
Which one’s coming out first, the Flash movie or the Gambit movie? Well one of them’s filmed! Still anyone’s guess if it’s coming out!
Love your show!
What’s good Nerds! Rod, it’s about DAMN TIME you finally got into Ghost of Tsushima!! Simply put, it is a Masterpiece! As you mentioned, the mark of a great game is when you’re just playing it aimlessly and completing all the side quests: chasing foxes, climbing to reach ridiculously placed Shrines for charms, slashing through bamboo strikes, tracking down a deadly bow and arrow assassin with that grumpy ass old man (Sensei Ishikawa), and soo much more. The game is a love letter to all things Japan and Samurai culture. I’ve 100% completed it 3 times now, and will soon play it all the way through again. It is by far my best game of the year of 2020 (and that’s saying a lot considering FF7 Remake also came out that year). The story is fantastic. The combat is phenomenal and an absolute blast to play. I love the variety of armor and accessories you can wear. I think i spend more time figuring out what to wear than actually killing Mongols (oops lol)… So happy to hear you are enjoying it. By the way, what did you name your Horse and what color did you pick?? I went with “Kage†and black because all black errrthang niggas! Can’t wait to see where they take the game next.
Peace out!
Suavy
Greetings to my favorite nerds,
Rod is right, about “something is killing the children ” I loved that comic. I got the graphic novel and went through it quickly few months ago. Another quick read that I enjoyed was Skyward. I feel like that would also make a good adaptation as a series as you are guaranteed a stunning visual show at least.
Ms. Marvel is my show, got family drama, real world history, the best wedding scene so far (I was Aamir, grab the helloooooo), my music Playlist got Pakistani tunes now. Let’s go and I love the cast!
