Forgot to write a review of this, months ago, since I already watched it. Rustin feels like another round of “just fine” bare minimum biopics that, just doesn’t punch above its weight. Colman Domingo alone is worth the price of admission, just killing it & it’s just unfortunate that the otherwise star-studded array of black talent & some white people is just “fine”. Certainly better than that Bob Marley biopic that came out earlier, but Rustin would’ve served as something more comprehensive, heavier than this. It’s above average, but that’s it.
Hey Rod!
I liked this film, and I liked your review. I think to bolster your point about Bayard Rustin not feeling lived in, it was actually the black preacher lover, Elias, that was completely made up for the film. Tom Kahn was a real person, but I guess they tried to play up their romantic relationship for the film? I too really liked the scenes between Bayard and Elias in the film and was kinda sad to find out he wasn’t real.
