I too concur with JL, lol. But I did enjoy this one, if not flat out love it like Fury Road or 1981’s The Road Warrior. Just the way it starts & the inconsistencies with the VFX was a problem to get through, until, the film found a flow. Alyla Browne was NOT a reason for the first act being so sluggish, I thought she was a great Young Furiosa & a game as fuck Chris Hemsworth also did plenty to keep me invested. It does run a little long. Once Anya Taylor-Joy gets to play the role, I was fully invested & really liked her stuntwork & the Dementus standoff. Sounds good, looks good (for the most part), well-acted.
As for the whole “Memorial Day failure” shit with this movie? I think we can all say what the problem is, & it has very little to do the quality of this movie. Streaming, COVID (pre- & post-), television & inflation are kicking Movie Theaters
asses. It’s an undeniable reality, at this point. It’s nothing but political talking points now. All of the “Hollywood needs to be more creative” can die a death of a thousand judgment cuts for all I care & I watch those movies that people claim to want to see on most opening nights or impromptu nights, like your “Mystery Mondays”. Everything has been tried. And we’re broke?
If anything, I’m ok with distributors go back to 90-days theatrical (with some exceptions) before appearing on VOD, streaming platform, etc. Shit is TOO immediate (and that’s something the public wanted, too, while they’re bitching & moaning about The Fall Guy costing too much money) & that was always a decent “middle-ground” before the pandemic forever changed things.
Also, I’m just over people’s inconsistent agendas on the cinematic experience from critics, the public & always online motherfuckers. Then again, you can merge that into one demographic, since, they can intersect too often.
Again, Furiosa’s good as fuck. Peace.
With Karen’s harsh review and “need more violence” critique I now think Rod got off easy with her just getting food during his surgery. The Furiosa Karen would be asking the doctor to pull the plug on Rod because “she needs more violence.” Hemsworth and the great action of the middle hour of Furiosa has me agreeing with Rod’s 4 stars.
