Just came out in Japan and I did a rare opening-day cinema experience. I thought it hit all the right notes moving from the heavy prequel movies back to the original timeline with a reboot mentality. This movie did a really good job of framing motivations with characters who are thoroughly disillusioned with the Company and actually showing a little bit more of the evil of the company while making room for the Aliens to take center-stage.
This movie felt like a reboot without actually rebooting the franchise, and it could be the breath of fresh air that they needed. Great review, and when firing in zero g remember, every action has an equal and opposite reaction…
Boy, Fede Alvarez must’ve lost a dogged fight against ol’ stuck in the mud ass Ridley Scott, because when Romulus isn’t trying to Cuban-B all of his dull & stupid philosophical stuff, it manages to feel distinctive. Overall, not bad, definitely pales in comparison to Prey, which introduced some compelling & fun aspects into the Predator lore. The problem with Romulus is we’re still stuck with Ridley’s “Alien” stuff (which, I still love the original), it’s just played out.
I did enjoy David Jonsson’s ambiguity with his droid character & a part of me wishes he stayed fully malevolent to the end & Caliee Spaeny did a fine job, just like most of the cast, it’s not memorable outside of Andy, imo. The zero gravity shootout was a fucking blast & showed that this thing could’ve been more than another trip down memory lane. Otherwise, this was fine.
