I see your point about Aunt May and hoe society doesn’t value older women but I also think that older people today look much younger than they did back then because we have access to more plastic surgery and skin care and exercise and stay out the sun. I think people take better care of themselves. So I think it could be a little of both the devaluation of older women and the evolution of the older baddies look at Beyoncé’s mom, Miss Tina. She’s nearly 70 and still has it going on. And Angela Bassett is still sexy in her 60s. Granted those are black women and we age like fine wine but I’ve seen plenty of older white baddies in Hollywood as well like Demi Moore. I could see her playing Aunt May.
I wouldn’t have Elon Musty’s baby even if I was paid millions. He’s gross and looks like he snuck on Earth. Crazy that he still looks like that after having extensive work done. Not only does his personality suck, his face makes me want to vomit.
Hey, on the topic of younger Aunt May, I may be missing a part of your point. You mentioned the age range 35-40 in your comments, but Melissa Tomei is 60 years old (i guess she would have been around 52 or so when the first of the newer Spider-Man movies came out). She’s around the age the Golden Girls were and older than Wilford Brimley and crew were in Cocoon. You did mention that she is of a certain age, and I wonder if that doesn’t tie differently into your commentary about the importance of Aunt May’s need for the Peter and how he lets her down when he’s not around. I find that as we have shifted from old gender and age roles in society, my friends that are women in their mid-50’s are far more handy around the house, more independent and more financially established. Do you think that there is a part of the shift in the art that is not just about erasing the elderly but that is reflecting that the elders/middle aged are presenting differently in society now?
But if you’re talking specific to the representation in the comics vs on the screen, I haven’t been in the books in over a decade, so apologies if I’m way off mark.
Listened a second time, and great episode from Old Aunt May to Uncle Tom Holland…
I never understood the thought that the young generation would be completely different and better.
Having a younger generation isn’t a new thing. All terrible people have been young once or are even still young.
Your Aunt May discussion got me thinking about how a lot of shows (the CW DC shows come to mind) and how there is a general move away from powerless side characters. Autonomy means different things to different people and being able to be empowered as who you are rather than being empowered in a similar way to the main character seems lost.
Yes, there are far too many characters (especially women) there just to be saved or iceboxed in shows and movies, but what needs to be done is to have their stories fleshed out rather than to eliminate that aspect of stories.
I also agree with the need for a range of ages in the body politic. That being said, I think that our older representatives should have the wisdom of age. A lot of politicians, especially on the right are nepo-babies who have gotten old but never wise – because they have been playing the game of life on easy mode with all the cheat codes.
Summary of my voicemail (s) a vast majority of the give leadership to the youth calls only applies to men that people like. Folks rarely ever apply that rule to women. A lot of young leaders around the world, (in Africa) are, not bad, they are WOEFUL. All they have to use to cover their tracks is say “France this or that” and we absolve them of responsibility. After their death and their victims who survived start talking. Who admits that we were wrong?
Great episode as always. I should return back to scam tangs!
